Material Traceability

  • How does Valley Iron Inc. track Heat Numbers for the material?

  • Valley Iron Inc. receives material from both domestic and foreign mill sources. When the material arrives at Valley Iron, the Material Test Reports (MTRs) are received with the load.

The MTR Heat Numbers are verified with the mill stencil on the material. Once the numbers are verified, the Heat Numbers are then manually transferred to specific locations on the material to ensure traceability after processing, or shipping the product.

The MTRs are then scanned and logged into a state-of-the-art computer system, where they can be accessed at any time.

The material is then put away in stock for future use with the Heat Number displayed for ease of traceability.

When the metal is processed, the Heat Number is transferred to the remnant piece for traceability and Material I.D during each processing phase. When an order is pulled, the Heat number is recorded and the corresponding MTR is printed and attached to the delivery receipt for shipment.
